Kayaking Florida Destinations

Whether you're looking for a challenge and want to test your kayaking skills or just want to see Florida from a different perspective, there are plenty of opportunities to do so. Joining a reputable kayak tour is a great way to see what Florida has to offer.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida is a popular destination for many prearranged kayak tours. A Day Away Outfitters offers several tours based at the refuge.

Manatee Encounter: Kayaking with this popular Florida resident and endangered species can be a fun and enlightening experience. The tour lasts two hours and manatee sightings are guaranteed from April through October.

The level of difficulty is easy.

Birdwatching Tour: This 90-minute kayak tour gives paddlers the opportunity to see some of Florida's migratory and native birds. Spoonbills, herons, egrets and many more make their home here. The difficulty level is easy.

Jet Night/Cold Light Bioluminescent Night Tour: This is not a tour to the refuge, but it is highly recommended. In the summer, the waters of the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon glow thanks to bioluminescence. Every movement produces light. Manatees glow, stingrays look like something out of a science fiction movie, and fast-moving small fish look like glow-in-the-dark rockets. The tour lasts 2 1/2 hours. Bioluminescence is guaranteed from June to September. The difficulty rating is easy. Kayakers can really see Florida Kayaking Destinations in a whole new light.

Big Bend Saltwater Paddling Tour.

This popular destination for sea kayakers in Florida is one of the longest and wildest authorized wetlands in the United States. The 105-mile trail offers a wide variety of marine and bird life. White pelicans, herons, bald eagles and ospreys inhabit the area. In the water, kayakers can see crabs, fish, sea turtles, manatees, cannonball jellyfish, small sharks and rays.

Six designated campsites are scattered along the route. Camping permits are required, and guidebooks are available. The trail is open from September 1 through June 30.

Blue Cypress Lake

Club kayak describes several available kayak routes and trips in Florida. Blue Cypress Lake is one of them. Freshwater kayaking on Florida's Blue Cypress Lake requires moderate kayaking skills. The round trip from Middleton's Fish Camp to Moonshine Bay is 7 miles.

The lake is home to trout bass, catfish, crappies and bluefish, among other fish species. Cypress trees, often populated by ospreys, surround the launch area. Possible side trips include exploring the cypress swamp with its subtropical ferns, mosquitoes and alligators.

Weeki Wachee River

Also to be explored by club kayak is the Weeki Wachee, a Florida spring that discharges more than 64 million gallons of water daily. While kayaking this Florida waterway, paddlers are likely to see manatees, alligators, raccoons, otters and a variety of birds. Commonly sighted birds include ducks, ibises, pelicans, herons, ospreys, wood storks and cormorants. For eight miles, Weeki Wachee meets the Gulf of Mexico.

Difficulty levels are beginner to advanced, and trail lengths range from 4 to 16 miles.

Florida kayaking options range from freshwater to saltwater and from calm water to rushing water. Kayaking trips are a fantastic way to try new waterways. State parks and kayak trails are another alternative.
